    Andrea Polkinghorn, BSN RN AMB-BC spoke to us about immunizations. A majority of the information was in regards to the HPV vaccine and the protection against cancer. We school nurses can save lives in many ways.

    Drugs in our communities - Updates from the field, presented by Ryan Pennock and Tyler Heine, DCI agents. So much info - it is crazy how easy it is for students get THC. When young people use drugs they may never be able to develop the part of their brain that regulates emotions. Imagine our students being 50 and still acting like a 13 year old.

    Whitney LaCroix,RN BSN Tribal Health President & Chief Nursing Officer spoke with us about Native American Healthcare Challenges.

  • Day 2 of Conference 2024

    Carrie Clarke, Chief Wellness Officer, School Nurse, and our National Board of Director started our day off with great information and updates from NASN.
    Jenna Hieb and Robyn Knecht from St Joseph’s Indian School. They talked with us about the Transition Process and Services at their school. So many things that I didn't know.
    Education and Services
    No tuition is charged and St. Joseph's Indian School provides for all the needs of approximately 200 Native American students. Everything from food and clothing to education, counseling and healthcare is provided.
    Loving houseparents live in the homes with 12 children. With a 6:1 student adult ratio, the children receive quality care and attention. We have 20 student homes.
    Our elementary school has small class sizes (12 students) and one-on-one attention. The students are taught all of the basics along with Lakota Studies and religious education.
    Our high school students attend Chamberlain High School and receive support of houseparents and group home living on St. Joseph's campus. In high school, the Native American students take part in a variety of activities and are integrated into a culturally diverse atmosphere to encourage future success.
    Annual Membership meeting:  Run by the president.  It was so informative and the reports interesting.  All BOD reports are on the website.  Here is a link to the website library.

Definition of School Nursing

School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.
